Survey on the Health Locus of Control in Obese Patients Undergoing Elective Bariatric Surgery

Objective

To investigate the health locus of control and its correlation with quality of life in patients undergoing elective bariatric surgery.

Methods

From September 2016 to June 2018, 90 obese patients who underwent elective bariatric surgery in department of gastrointestinal surgery of the first affiliated hospital of Jinan university were selected as research objects. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 90 inpatients who underwent elective bariatric surgery by adopting the multidimensional health psychological control source scale (MHLC), generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7), patient health questionnaire depression symptom group scale (PHQ-9) and health survey brief table (SF-36).

Results

The score of the internal health locus of control of patients undergoing elective bariatric surgery was lower than the norm (P<0.05), and the score of the powerful others or chance locus of control was higher than the norm (P<0.05). The difference of the chance locus of control between patients with emotional disorder and patients without emotional disorder is statistically significant (P<0.05). There was a negative correlation between the chance locus of control and quality of life score (P<0.05).

Conclusions

Emotional disorders affect the health locus of control in patients. The chance locus of control are negatively correlated with the quality of life. Patients with bariatric surgery have obvious tendency to the powerful others or chance locus of control.
