Abstract:

Obesity promotes the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis of the lower extremities through biomechanical and systemic inflammatory changes, which result in structural damage to the joint and limited function. Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective methods to treat obesity, which can effectively relieve joint symptoms and slow or even reverse the progression of osteoarthritis. This article reviews the role of obesity in developing lower limb osteoarthritis from the correlation and potential mechanism between obesity and osteoarthritis. In addition, this article summarizes the effect and mechanism of bariatric surgery on lower limb osteoarthritis in obese patients to provide new ideas and directions for the treatment of obese patients with osteoarthritis.
