A retrospective analysis of Chinese clinical literatures on bariatric surgery published over the past 10 years by using bibliometric analysis to investigate the research progress of bariatric surgery in China.

Methods

By using search terms ("bariatric surgery", "metabolic surgery", "sleeve gastrectomy", "gastric bypass" and "gastric bandage"), the related literatures on bariatric surgery collected by Wanfang and CNKI database from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018 were retrieved. Through the number of papers published annually in the citations, the authors, institutions and related magazines, citation times are collated and analyzed.

Results

A total of 1,222 literatures related to bariatric surgery were retrieved. The annual publication of articles related to bariatric surgery showed a trend of first increasing and then stabilizing, from 34 in 2009 to 175 in 2015, and then showing a relatively stable trend. Jiangfan Zhu, Cunchuan Wang, Chengzhu Zheng have published the most papers in the field of bariatric surgery. The First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, Changhai Hospital of Second Military Medical University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University are in the leading position in the field of bariatric surgery in China. Chinese Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery, Chinese Journal of Practical Surgery are the most frequently published journals on bariatric surgery.

Conclusions

At present, bariatric surgery is basically mature in China, but multi-center prospective clinical trials are needed to further confirm the effectiveness of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes mellitus.
