Abstract:

Obesity is a prevalent disease that may lead to thyroid dysfunction. The prevalence of overt and subclinical hypothyroidism is significantly higher in patients with obesity compared to the general population. Moreover, weight loss can restore thyroid function by improving the inflammatory state. Bariatric surgery has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for obesity and related comorbidities. However, the effect of bariatric surgery on thyroid hormone and function remains uncertain. This article summarizes the effects and mechanisms of bariatric surgery on thyroid function and thyroid diseases to provide evidence for clinical practice.

Key words: Bariatric surgery, Obesity, Thyroid function, Thyroid hormone, Hypothyroidism
