Abstract:

Objective

To explore the effect of peer education combined with family rehabilitation guidance among adolescent patients after bariatric and metabolic surgery.

Methods

A total of 80 obese adolescents undergoing bariatric surgery from May 2021 to April 2023 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were randomly assigned to either a control group receiving standard care or an observation group receiving additional peer education combined with family rehabilitation guidance, based on the weight loss salon model, in addition to usual care. The effects of nursing interventions were then compared between the two groups.

Results

There were no significant differences in the scores of physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functions in the quality of life before intervention between the two groups (t= 0.954, 1.324, 0.401, 1.250, and 0.265; P= 0.343, 0.189, 0.690, 0.215, and 0.992). After the intervention, the scores of both groups were improved. The scores of physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functions in the observation group were better than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (t= 4.104, 6.736, 3.064, 4.430, and 13.518; P was < 0.001, except for emotional function was 0.004). The nursing satisfaction of the observation group patients is higher than that of the control group (χ2=7.671, P=0.012).

Conclusions

Peer education combined with family rehabilitation guidance significantly improves the continuum of care for adolescent patients after bariatric surgery, enhancing patients' quality of life, promoting the establishment of healthy behaviors, and increasing their engagement with weight management knowledge. Given the rising trend of bariatric surgeries among adolescents, this approach offers superior care services for patients and provides a model for standardized postoperative care.
